Day trip Itinerary to the Historical and Cultural City Andong

Andong region in North Gyeongsang province has many renowned historical and cultural sites. One major attraction of this province is Andong Mask Dance Festival - 안동 탈춤 축제. Korean traditional mask dance or Talchum (탈춤) is a form of drama featuring dance and singing while wearing mask. Mask dance in Korea  also have different name depends on the origin of the dance. The Hwanghae province are known as talchum, those from Seoul and Gyeonggi known as sandae nori. South gyeongsang province calls its version of mask dance as ogwangdae, which means five clowns or five scenes. The eastern part of Korea refers theirs as yaryu or deulloreu, which means am open field performance. The mask dance in Andong is called byeolsingut talneori, which is conducted as a part of shamanic ritual in old times.

Andong Mask Dance Festival it self has more than 50 events and hands-on experience program such as International Mask Dance Performance (I even seen Indonesian team and Vietnamese Team in the Opening Ceremony), World Mask Performance, World Mask Competition, Original Mask Performance, Mask Dance Learning, Puppet Play, Mask Masking, Food Exhibition and also Kpop Mask Dance. The festival until 9th of this month so make sure you don't missed it!

 

ANDONG HAHOE FOLK VILLAGE 안동하회마을

Andong Hahoe Folk Village is an Unesco World Heritage Site, the beautiful clan village that may not want to be missed. It's 40 minutes by bus from Andong terminal. Most of city in the North Gyeongsang Province are misty in the morning so when you arrive early in the morning the mystical fog creates another atmosphere of the village. There are several activities that you can do in this village such as tea ceremony,  straw  grass craft, learning at the  confucian academy, learn to draw calligraphy, cooking hwajeon the korean pancake with flower, or just simply strolls around the village. 

Unfortunately its raining all day long when we arrived at there but it didn't even changes the beauty of it. farm fields stretch out the horizon and green surroundings will make you feels like you turning back to the Joseon Dynasty.

Hahoe village still maintained by the 230 residents so make sure to respect people privacy here. The Multilingual Audio Guide can be pick up for free at the information booth at the entrance of to the village (need id/passport shown).

Buyoungdae, the 64 meter high cliff also can be seen a good place to get bird eye view of the village. You need to take a ferry to go there though. Ferry ticket will cost you 3000 krw for round trip.

ANDONG MASK MUSEUM 안동 탈박물관
Near The Hahoe Folk Village, you can also go to Andong Mask Museum House, where you can see the collection of the mask from all over the world. Here in the museum you can also make ur own mask from clay.

ANDONG DOSANSEOWON 안동 도산서원
Andong also known for its confucian academy. You can either visit Byeongsanseowon Confucian Scool that established for tribute Seong-nyeong yu or Dosanseowon Confucian Academy which established in 1574 for cherished their memories of premier Lee Hwang.

ANDONG JJIMDALK STREET 안동 찜닭골목
안동 찜닭 Andong Jjimdalk - Andong Braised Chicken is super duper must try dish in Andong.  Kid you not this sweet, lil bit spicy, yet savoury combination dish is the best one i ever had in Korea!

Recommended Itinerary

To go to Andong you can either take bus from Central city Bus terminal (16.500 krw ) or Mugunghwa train from Cheongryangri Station 청량리(15.500 krw)

For  Andong Dam 안동댐 and KBS studio KBS드라마촬영장, from Andong Bus Terminal take bus number 1 stop at Gyobosaengmyeong Bus Station 교보생명정류장  for transfer to bus number 3 and get off at Bakmulgwan station 박물관정류장.
From KBS studio KBS드라마촬영장 to  Jjimdalk street 찜닭골목, across the road and  take bus number 3  stop at Gyobosaengmyeong Bus Station 교보생명정류장 walk around 300m to the Jjimdalk street 찜닭골목.

From Jjimdalk street 찜닭골목 walk around 300 m to Gusijangipgu 구시장입구정류장  and take bus number 46  get off at  Hahoemaeul station 하회마을정류장  for visiting mask museum and then walk to  Hahoe Folk Village 안동하회마을.


To go back to Andong terminal take bus number 46 from Hahoe Folk Village.
